Small Enterprise Research (ISSN 1321-5906) continues its tradition as a forum supporting the objectives of SEAANZ including the development of scholarship, education and research in respect of small enterprise.

Focus areas for research to be published in the journal include:
At a general level:
- The management of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) including entrepreneurial firms
- The growth and sustainability of SMEs and entrepreneurial firms
- The contribution of SMEs and entrepreneurial firms to regional and national economies
- The roles, attributes and characteristics of the individuals who start up and run SMEs
At a more specific level:
- Managing new business start-ups, growth and succession
- Family firm issues
- Home based enterprises
- Strategy, governance, planning, learning and leadership in privately owned firms
- Financial management of small enterprise
- Human resource management in small enterprises
- Studies with a regional or indigenous focus
- Emerging and developed economies
- Enterprise policy in respect to SMEs
- Education and training outcomes
- Studies of SME owner-managers from the perspective of age, gender, or ethnicity
